Lakers Fan Dropped 170 Pounds With Mamba Mentality

From nothingness, the universe was created. From a simple caterpillar, a butterfly emerges. A dorky teen grows up to be a fashion model, or a bodybuilder. The one constant in life is change, and in our Transformation of the Week series, AskMen is celebrating men and women who have turned their lives around through dedication, commitment and hard work. There’s no question that there are millions of fans across the world that have been inspired by Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, who had both his No. 8 and No. 24 jersey retired at the Staples Center earlier this week. But few fans more than Chris Huerta.

The Lakers fanatic dropped 170 pounds since Bryant’s final game in April 2016 and credited his determination to following the “Mamba Mentality.”

He tweeted his progress this week and immediately went viral, receiving more than 6,000 retweets in two days. Team president and Lakers owner Jeanie Buss even reached out through social media, saying “You gave me chills,” before thanking Huerta for sharing his incredible transformation.

“Down 170 lbs since @kobebryant’s last game,” his tweet said. “Took it one day at a time with that #MambaMentality.”

So what is the Mamba Mentality? Bryant, a 20-year vet and five-time NBA champ who once dubbed himself the Black Mamba, described it himself  this way: “It’s a constant quest to try to be better today than you were yesterday.”

Huerta told SB Nation had taken the now-viral photo outside the Staples Center the day of Bryant’s final game. But two weeks earlier a close friend of his was jailed. On that same day, another friend committed suicide. “I was in a dark place for about two months after that period,” he said.

But soon after that another friend reached out to help Huerta change his diet, and showed him a few exercises. He stuck to the routine and lost 35 pounds in five weeks.  Huerta said he cut out dairy, sugar and carbs. He started slow with this exercise program but stayed consistent.

“Most importantly you have to believe you can do it and just be patient,” he tweeted.
