Blueberry-Banana and Cacao Smoothie Bowl

From açai to chia, smoothie bowls are all the rage these days, and after trying them, it’s no surprise why. Not only do these beautiful dishes of color, texture and flavor provide a fresh and healthy start to the day, they are also a breeze to whip up. What’s more? There are endless combinations to be made so that you can adapt your recipe based on the ingredients you have on hand or prefer, and whatever fruit is in season.

Keeping blueberries and peeled bananas on hand in the freezer means that this recipe can always be prepared up on a moment’s notice. Whether you buy fruit frozen or freeze your own fresh supply, your favorites, from strawberries and cherries to peaches and mango, can be swapped into this recipe. If you want to make your smoothie bowl dairy free, any nut-based or lactose-free milk will work fine in place of cow’s milk. The combination of seeds, nuts and fresh fruit spread over the top of this smoothie bowl is simple and satisfying, but you can get creative with your ingredients - try mixing in your go-to granola, a sprinkling of toasted coconut, a pinch of bee pollen or a spoonful of nut butter. No matter how you spin it, a nutritious smoothie bowl will bring a new sense of brightness to your morning routine.

2 frozen bananas
1 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 cup milk (or your favorite milk substitute)
2 teaspoons raw cacao powder
1 teaspoon chia seeds
2 teaspoons sunflower seeds
1 tablespoon almonds, roughly chopped
Fresh berries, to garnish

In a food processor or blender, purée bananas, blueberries, milk and cacao powder until smooth. Pour into a bowl, top with chia seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds and fresh fruit. Serve immediately.

Serves 2

A perfect snack before you jump into a HIIT workout!
